French assignats were a form of paper currency used in France during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. These banknotes were initially issued in 1789 to finance the French Revolution and were backed by the value of confiscated church lands.

Assignats were designed to be a temporary measure, but their use continued for several years, and they eventually became the primary form of currency in France. The assignats featured intricate designs and engravings, often with patriotic themes, and were issued in varying denominations.

However, as the French government continued to issue more and more assignats, their value began to decline rapidly. By 1796, hyperinflation had set in, and the assignats had become virtually worthless. The use of assignats was eventually abolished in 1797, and they were replaced by a new currency, the franc.

Today, French assignats are highly sought after by collectors and historians for their historical significance and unique design. Despite their brief lifespan and eventual failure, these banknotes offer a fascinating glimpse into the economic and political turmoil of the French Revolution.
